PCOS
Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is one of the most common endocrine disorders, yet commonly overlooked and often times a diagnosis is delayed. This condition is often under treated and many woman share that they do not feel they’ve been provided adequate education after receiving their diagnosis in regard to emotional support and long-term effects of untreated PCOS. This is especially concerning knowing that research shows diet and proper nutritional interventions can help improve metabolic and reproductive health. Other long-term issues that are increased with individuals suffering with PCOS include Type 2 Diabetes, cardiovascular disease, metabolic syndrome and cancer.
Often times at Lotus Therapy Group we also see a connection with mood disorders, eating disorders, and PCOS. Individuals with PCOS tend to have higher rates of depression. Difficulty with mood is often due to imbalances in hormones paired with the often times untreated and unclear source of the symptoms. Eating disorders or disordered eating behaviors have also been studied to be more than four times greater with women diagnosed with PCOS. Bulimia nervosa and Binge Eating Disorder is more common amongst women with PCOS due to elevated insulin levels that can affect hunger and cravings.
Nutrition intervention is one of the main focuses for treatment of PCOS. However, diet alone is often times not enough. At Lotus Therapy Group we pair the nutrimental support with mental and emotional support to treat the disease as a whole. This can help the individual heal from the outside in and cope with an often times misunderstood medical condition.
